How To Stop Teams From Launching After Sign-Out

Hello,

At the end of my workday, I sign out of Teams to begin shutting down my computer. However, after I confirm the pop-up to sign out, the Teams window will disappear...only to appear to launch again at the sign-in screen. If I click 'X' in the top right to close the app quickly, it will still launch a 2nd time. How do I stop Teams from re-launching after sign-out? This does not appear to be controlled by the "Auto-Start Teams," setting, which I currently have unchecked. My Microsoft Teams version shows 25306.804.4102.7193, but I've faced this issue for some time.

You don't need to sign out of Teams in order to stop application from running on your computer.

In order to close Teams, right click on the Teams icon in the System Tray and select "Quit Teams".

    Hi @SDF

I hope you are doing well.

If the problem still persists after trying the previous steps, please check whether your device is a managed device (for example, a company laptop). In some cases, group policies or admin settings can override your preferences. If that’s the case, you may need to contact your IT support team to verify and adjust those settings.

If your device is not managed, here’s an additional workaround you can try:

1/ Create Teams Shortcut:   You can often create shortcut by right- click on the "create shortcut" button on Teams.exe file, but with Teams apps download from Microsoft Store, it'd be an issue when trying to create shortcut. To resolve that:

    • Click Windows + R key to open the 'Run dialog box'.
    • Type shell:appsfolder and click enter.
    • It opens the application folder.
    • Find Microsoft teams in the lists, right-click and click create shortcut.  User's image

    2/ Modify Teams Shortcut Properties

    • Right-click the Teams shortcut (on Desktop or in Startup folder) > Properties.
    • Under the Shortcut tab, set Run to Minimized.     User's image

This set up will keep your Teams stay minimized along with Teams "Auto-start" settings without it pops up.

Please give it a try and I'd love to hear the progress afterwards.

    Warm Regards,

    Hi @SDF

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the details of what you’re experiencing with Microsoft Teams. I understand how inconvenient it can be when the app reopens after you’ve signed out, especially at the end of your workday.

This behavior is not controlled by the Auto-start Teams setting alone. Teams often relaunch after sign-out because of background settings or the machine-wide installer.

Here are a few steps you can try:

1/ Turn off background behavior in Teams

    • Open Teams → Click on three dot menu → Settings → General
    • Uncheck “On close, keep the application background”  User's image User's image

2/ Disable background apps in Windows

    • Go to Settings (Press Windows + I) → Apps → Installed Apps
    • Choose Microsoft Teams → Go to Advanced options
    • Under Background apps permissions, set to Never. User's image

    3/ Clear Teams cache

Please refer to this article for step-by-step instructions with suitable OS: Clear the Teams client cache

4/ Create a new local user profile

    • Creating a new Windows user profile helps determine if the issue is profile-specific.
    • Corrupted user settings or cached data can cause Teams to crash repeatedly. If Teams works under a new profile, the root cause is likely tied to the original profile rather than the system or Teams installation.
    • To learn more, please visit: Manage User Accounts in Windows - Microsoft Support  User's image
    • Sign in with your new local account
    • Open Teams, sign in your Teams account and check if the issue persists
