Why are all my jpeg files only showing as paint on my computer

The issue of JPEG files opening as Paint on your computer can be attributed to a few reasons:

  • File Association Problem: The file associations for JPEG files may have been set incorrectly, its keeps on turning my JPEG Files into Paint Files, I cannot upload them or attached them, or integrate. Please help.

    Hi @Michael-Liberte

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding your issue, this often causes the integration and upload issues you mentioned because the system is trying to pass the file through Paint's specific protocol rather than a standard image previewer.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    1. The "Open With" Fix
    • Find any JPEG file on your computer.
    • Right-click the file and hover over "Open with".
    • Select "Choose another app" at the bottom of the list.
    • Select the Photos app (or your preferred image viewer).
    • Crucial Step: Check the box at the bottom that says "Always use this app to open .jpg files" (or ".jpeg").
    • Click OK.

Note: You may need to repeat this once for .jpg and once for .jpeg if they are behaving differently.

    1. Reset via Windows Settings
    • Press the Windows Key + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Default apps.
    • In the search bar under "Set a default for a file type," type .jpg.
    • User's image
    • Click on the current icon (Paint) and select Photos (images) or Edge/Adobe (PDFs) from the list.
    • Click Set default.
    • Repeat this search for .jpeg to ensure both formats are fixed.
    1.  Restart Explorer
    • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
    • Find "Windows Explorer," right-click, select Restart.
    • Verify files now open correctly.

Hopefully it will help resolve your issue effectively and if you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Find any JPEG file on your computer.

Right-click it and hover over Open with, then select Choose another app.

Select the app you want to open them in.

Make sure you check the box at the bottom that says "Always use this app to open .jpg files".

    Click OK.

Repeat these steps once for a PNG and once for a PDF (choosing Edge or Adobe for the PDF).
