One Drive is not working correctly

I am a long-time MS365 user. I’ve been using Apple with MS Personal Classic for the past 2 years. It usually works pretty good though there are occasional issues. Well, I am having a somewhat major issue now.

I renamed a file on OneDrive on the iPad yesterday. The file got corrupted. It went to 0kb, was unreadable and showed the ‘shared’ icon next to it. I did a little investigating and after an account reset, the file came back. But still any time I rename a file, it gets corrupted. On the iPhone too. I proceeded to log out of One Drive. No change. I removed the app and reloaded, no change.

Then I tried to move a file on the iPad. OneDrive says the file is moved, but it is not moving. I logged onto Onedrive.com (on the iPad) and tried to move a file from one folder to another and received this error message:  1 item wasn't moved. The destination path cannot be the same as the source object.  The source folder is not the same as the destination folder.  The source and destination are not the same.  But, I was able to rename a file successfully and it showed the updated file name on my iPad.

Some things are working - Outlook + I created an excel & word files yesterday and saved them, but there could be other things broken that I haven’t found yet.

My Apple devices are updated to 26.2 - I do not know if this started with that update. One Drive updated a couple days ago. Can anyone help me??? thanks! : )

I posted an errormessage about a year ago on the same issue, but did not get any helpful answers. Seems like the problem persist even after upgrade to IOS 26.3.
I have tried all the above suggestions, even deleted the OneDrive app and reinstalled it.
The files and folders affected have all been shared with a user with mail adress not associated with a Microsoft Account. The sharing works fine, but I noticed its for those folders the bug manifests itself.
Folders I have created and not shared does not have the problem.

Hey there! I have had an similar issue and I believe I also had an error message along the lines of: 1 item wasn't moved. The destination path cannot be the same as the source object. The source folder is not the same as the destination folder. Double check if your file path (drive letter:\folder name\folder name\file name) doesn't exceed 256 characters! OneDrive can start to act properly weird when a path exceeds 256 characters, i.e. give all sorts of cryptic error messages. Hope this helps! Good luck!

    Hello Donna M,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

I understand that you’re experiencing an issue with OneDrive. I completely understand how frustrating that can feel. Let me help you work through this situation.

I am so sorry for the inconvenient it might cause. With your situation, I suggest you try these steps:

Step 1: Check OneDrive Web (very important)

    On onedrive.com, please check:

    • Do the corrupted files show 0 KB there as well?
    • Are files stuck showing “shared” when they shouldn’t be?

    Try this:

    • Create a new folder
    • Upload a new test file
    • Rename it on the web only

If actions on the web work normally but renaming from the mobile app causes issues, that confirms an iOS OneDrive app bug.

Step 2: Disable Files On-Demand (temporary workaround)

    On iPhone / iPad:

    • Open OneDrive
    • Go to Settings
    • Turn OFF: “Files On-Demand” / “Offline files” (wording may vary)
    • Restart your device

This can reduce metadata sync errors.

Step 3: Sign out everywhere (full reset)

    Do this in order:

    • Sign out of OneDrive on all Apple devices
    • Go to account.microsoft.com
    • Sign out of all sessions
    • Wait 15–30 minutes
    • Sign back in on ONE device only (start with the iPad)
    • Test by renaming one non‑important file

Step 4: Check storage & account health

    On OneDrive web:

    • Make sure you’re not over your storage limit
    • Check the Recycle Bin (corrupted files sometimes end up there)
    • Look for duplicate or conflict versions

Note: Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,
