If your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, no-one, not even Microsoft support are able to access the Bitlocker key, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

BitLocker recovery keys cannot be generated or retrieved by Microsoft Support or anyone else if they were not previously backed up. Changing hardware such as a keyboard can cause BitLocker to prompt for the recovery key.

To get the BitLocker key for the laptop, check where it may have been backed up when BitLocker was first enabled:

    1. Microsoft account (for personal devices)
      • From another device, go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
      • Sign in with the Microsoft account that was used on the laptop.
      • Match the Recovery Key ID shown on the blue BitLocker screen with the list and use the corresponding 48‑digit key.
    2. Work or school account / organization-managed device
      • If the laptop is Azure AD/Entra ID joined or Intune-enrolled:
      • Alternatively, go to the My Account portal Devices page and select View BitLocker Keys for the locked device.
      • If the key is not visible, contact the organization’s IT admin; they may have access to the recovery key in their management tools.
    3. Other possible backup locations
      • Printed copy stored with company records or user documentation.
      • Saved to a USB flash drive as a text file.

If the BitLocker recovery key cannot be found in any of these locations, the drive cannot be unlocked and the only option is to reset or reimage the device using Windows recovery or a clean install, which will erase all data on the encrypted drive.
