I own the go daddy domain under jinspirehousing.co.uk, I have an outlook email address, when i go to log in teams > Create new account or even log in it doesnt let me use that email.

i thought teams you can use any email address?

please can someone advise as i would prefer to use that email rather than my personal gmail address for meetings - i work from home so i use my personal laptop im not in an office or share with other employees. I have a meeting invite to send to client for next tuesday.

Can you please explain why it doesn't work?

Theresno contact number to call so its quite frustrating I have to write this and wait.

Thanks in advance

    Hello @Amun Bhachu

Good day! Thank you for posting your valuable question on the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, I understand that you’re unable to sign in or create a Microsoft Teams account using your work email under your domain, which is hosted through GoDaddy. You expected to be able to use this email for Teams, but Teams is not accepting it.

Please let me know if I misunderstood any part of your issue or if there are additional details you’d like to share.

To help us provide the most accurate and effective solution, could you share a bit more detail about your setup:

    • What exact error message do you receive when attempting to sign in? If possible, please provide a screenshot describing the issue with your personal information removed.
    • Do you have access to the Microsoft 365 admin center for this domain? If you can sign in at https://admin.microsoft.com using your work email, that means your email already exists as part of that tenant.
    • Is your email currently hosted under GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 plan?
    • Do you know whether your domain’s DNS has been verified for Microsoft 365 before?  Domains must be verified (via TXT or Domain Connect) before Microsoft Teams can work correctly with them.
    • Are you trying to use Microsoft Teams Free, or Teams as part of a Microsoft 365 business subscription?
    • Could you let us know whether the issue occurs when signing in on the Teams desktop app, Teams on the web, or Teams mobile? Please try switching between these platforms to see if sign‑in works on any of them.
    • What is your operating system and its version (Windows, MacOs, iOS, Android,...)?

This additional context will help us understand your environment and what steps may already have been attempted so we can tailor our guidance effectively.

In the meantime, here are some basic checks you can try:

    • Try signing in at https://teams.microsoft.com using a private/incognito browser and choose Work or School Account when prompted. This often works if the domain is already part of an M365 tenant.
    • Log in to your GoDaddy Email & Office Dashboard to confirm whether the domain is already assigned to a Microsoft 365 service. If so, it cannot be registered again in a new tenant.
    • Verify whether your domain DNS has been configured for Microsoft 365, either automatically via Domain Connect or manually with TXT/MX records. Incorrect DNS prevents Teams from accepting the domain.

I apologize if I could not jump straight to a solution. I want to avoid suggesting anything that might be inaccurate or unhelpful. Once we have the details above, we’ll be able to assist you more effectively and guide you toward the right resolution.

Looking forward to your response so we can get this sorted out for you together.

Teams does not accept every work email directly; it depends on how that email/domain is set up in Microsoft’s systems.

Key points for the jinspirehousing.co.uk address:

    1. A Microsoft account is required for Teams Free
      • To use the free version of Microsoft Teams, the email address must be associated with a Microsoft account.
      • If the jinspirehousing.co.uk address is not yet a Microsoft account, first create one, then sign in to Teams Free with that account.
      • Steps (from Teams Free guidance):
        1. Open the Teams app.
        2. Enter the jinspirehousing.co.uk email and select Next.
        3. Choose Create a free account if prompted.
        4. Follow the instructions to create the Microsoft account, then sign in to Teams.
    2. The domain might already be tied to a Microsoft 365 tenant
      • If the domain jinspirehousing.co.uk has ever been added to a Microsoft 365 tenant (even by a previous provider or someone else), Microsoft may treat that email as a work/school account belonging to that tenant.
      • In that case, trying to “create a new account” in Teams Free with that address can fail or show errors like “Someone has already set up Teams for your organization” or similar.
      • When that happens, the correct action is to sign in using the existing organization tenant instead of creating a new free tenant, or use a different (personal) email for Teams Free.
    3. Possible causes and resolutions based on documented behavior
      • Cause: Someone has already set up Teams for the domain
        • Resolution:
          • Check for an invitation email to join an existing Teams organization.
          • Try opening https://teams.microsoft.com in a private/incognito browser and sign in using the jinspirehousing.co.uk credentials if they exist as a work/school account.
      • Cause: The email is tied to both a work and a personal Microsoft account
        • Resolution:
          • Use a private/incognito browser.
          • When prompted with “Which account do you want to use?”, choose the correct one (Work or school vs Personal).
          • If needed, rename the personal Microsoft account so the work address is not used as a personal alias.
    4. If the domain is already in a tenant and you cannot access it
      • If jinspirehousing.co.uk is registered in a Microsoft 365 tenant that is not under your control, that tenant owns the domain in Microsoft 365 and you cannot independently create a new Teams tenant for the same domain.
      • In that situation, either:
        • Use a different email (such as a personal Microsoft account) for Teams Free meetings, or
        • Set up or regain access to the existing Microsoft 365 tenant that holds jinspirehousing.co.uk and use Teams through that tenant.
    5. Why a personal Gmail works but the work domain does not
      • Personal addresses (like Gmail) are not tied to any existing Microsoft 365 tenant by default, so they can be used freely to create a Teams Free account.
      • Custom domains (like jinspirehousing.co.uk) may already be registered in a Microsoft 365 tenant or not yet configured as Microsoft accounts, which is why they can fail when trying to sign up directly.

For sending a meeting invite next Tuesday, the quickest path is to:

    • Use a personal Microsoft account (for example, the existing Outlook.com or another personal address) to sign in to Teams Free and schedule the meeting, while separately working on getting the jinspirehousing.co.uk address properly set up as a Microsoft account or within a Microsoft 365 tenant.
