Dear Microsoft Support,

We are experiencing an issue in SharePoint Online where a folder cannot be deleted because it is showing as Locked (Unassigned).

Details of the issue:

  • Platform: SharePoint Online
  • Document Library: [Insert Library Name]

Error: Folder shows Locked (Unassigned) and cannot be deleted.

Troubleshooting already completed:

Checked that no files in the folder are checked out

Confirmed no users currently have the folder open

Attempted deletion from both the SharePoint web interface and Explorer view

Confirmed there are no active sync sessions via OneDrive

Verified permissions and that we have Site Collection Admin access

Despite these checks, the folder remains locked and cannot be removed.

Please could you assist with:

Identifying what process or service is holding the lock

Releasing the lock if it is a backend SharePoint process

Advising on how we can safely delete the folder

If required, we can provide screenshots, correlation IDs, and timestamps of the error.

    Dear @Cleon Russell ,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you're currently unable to delete a folder in SharePoint Online because it's showing as “Locked (Unassigned),” even after confirming there are no check-outs, open sessions, or permission issues.

Have you had a chance to check the suggestion provided by our Q&A Assistant above? If the issue persists, please let us know which suggestions you tried and what happened.

To better assistance, could you please confirm the following:

Was this folder ever associated with a Microsoft Teams channel?

Are there any known retention policies or legal holds applied to this site or library?

Has this folder been used by any integrated apps?

Have you tried renaming the folder in the SharePoint web interface to see if the Delete option becomes available?Your detailed response will help us diagnose and investigate the issue more efficiently.

I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If I misunderstood what you’re looking for, feel free to let me know or share a screenshot. I’d be happy to help further!

I'm looking forward for your reply. Thank you for your cooperation.

For a SharePoint Online folder that cannot be deleted and appears locked, focus on the known SharePoint-side causes that block deletion and address them in order.

    1. Verify the folder is not tied to a Teams channel
      • If this folder is (or was) the backing folder for a Microsoft Teams standard channel, it may be protected.
      • For channels deleted before August 2022, the folder was not properly disconnected from Teams and could not be deleted directly.
      • Mitigation:
        1. In the modern SharePoint library view, select the three dots (More actions) next to the folder.
        2. Select Rename, give it a temporary name, and select Rename.
        3. Open More actions again and check if Delete is now available; if so, delete the folder.
        4. If a Go to channel option appears when opening the folder, the folder is still associated with an active Teams channel. Delete the corresponding Teams channel first, then delete the folder.
    2. Confirm standard deletion path works when not blocked
      • In the document library, select the folder (check box, not the name) and choose Delete from the toolbar, then confirm in the dialog.
      • If this fails or the delete option is disabled, continue with the next checks.
    3. Check for retention labels or policies blocking deletion
      • Retention labels or retention policies can prevent folder deletion even when permissions and check-out status are correct.
      • If a retention policy applies:
        • Folder deletion can be blocked until items subject to retention are moved or deleted.
        • Move or delete any files in the folder that have retention labels or are governed by a retention policy, then try deleting the folder again.
      • If a compliance policy is blocking deletion at the site level, a Microsoft 365 admin must review and adjust the policy before deletion is possible.
    4. Validate permissions and site health
      • Ensure the account used is a site collection administrator (already confirmed) and that the site has not exceeded its storage quota. If the site is over quota, increase the site quota and then retry deletion.
    5. Use administrative tools to force deletion
      • If all above checks are satisfied and the folder remains locked, a SharePoint admin can use SharePoint Patterns and Practices (PnP) PowerShell to force deletion of items that cannot otherwise be deleted.
      • This should be done by an administrator familiar with PnP, as it can permanently remove content.
    6. If the folder is part of a Power Apps / document management integration
      • If the folder was created by an integrated application (for example, Dynamics 365/Power Apps document management), and has been renamed, moved, or deleted outside that app, the integration may expect it at a specific path.
      • In such cases, recreate or restore the folder at the expected path and then manage it from the owning application, or coordinate with the app owner before deletion.

If the folder still shows as locked after these steps, collect correlation IDs and timestamps from the failed delete attempts and open a support case with Microsoft 365 support so backend locks or corruption can be investigated and cleared by Microsoft.
