To move from Microsoft 365 Family to a Microsoft 365 for business plan and get 5 licenses for 5 employees, use a business subscription instead of upgrading the existing Family plan.

There are two main parts:

2. Move each person to the new business subscription and stop using the Family plan for work

1. Switch from Family to a Microsoft 365 for business subscription

2. Ensure 5 licenses and move users

After the business subscription is created:

1. Make sure the business subscription has at least 5 licenses.
2. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, assign one license to each employee account.
3. Have each employee sign in to Office apps and services with their new business account instead of the Family account.

If later changing between different Microsoft 365 for business plans (for example, Business Basic → Business Premium), use the Upgrade or change to a different Microsoft 365 for business plan guidance:
