How do you connect to Power bi

I have a Power bi Pro license through work and I also am a guest on another tenant. The guest tenant is not showing up in my work account. and my work account is not showing up on the guest tenant.

It seems as though I have 2 accounts tied to the same email address.

I would like to connect to the tenant that i am a guest on from my work account so that I can use my Pro license.

Is this possible?

Thanks

I think that… ur Pro lic just can’t cross that tenant wall, so the only thing that actually works is hop into the guest tenant once and have their admin tag a Pro on that guest‑obj.

    Good day Danielle M Johnson

“Work account” and your “guest account” as two separate identities, even if they share the same email address. That’s why you’re not seeing your Pro license carry over when you log into the guest tenant ,it’s tied to your home tenant only. The guest access basically lets you collaborate in another tenant, but it doesn’t merge licenses across tenants.

You can absolutely access the guest tenant from your work account, but you’ll still be seen as a guest there. That means your Pro license from your home tenant won’t automatically apply. If the other tenant wants you to have Pro features, they’d need to assign you a Pro license in their tenant as well. There’s no way to “transfer” or “share” your existing license across tenants it’s a per‑tenant entitlement.

From a practical standpoint, you’ll want to use the tenant switcher in Power BI service (top right corner of the portal) to hop between your home tenant and the guest tenant. Just keep in mind: when you’re in the guest tenant, you’re operating under whatever license that tenant has given you. If they haven’t assigned you Pro, you’ll be limited to free features there.

So short answer: you can connect and collaborate as a guest, but your Pro license doesn’t follow you into another tenant. If you need Pro capabilities in that guest tenant, the admin there will need to assign you one.

If this clears things up, please hit "Accept the answer" so that it could be spread further to those in need too. If not, is there anything I can help you with? Please let me know.

Yes, it is possible, but only under specific licensing conditions.

Key points from the scenario and documentation:

    1. A guest user normally uses the license from their home organization
External/guest users typically have a Power BI license assigned by their own organization. When they sign in, they connect to their own tenant by default and then switch to external tenants where they are guests.
    2. To use a Pro license as a guest in another tenant, one of these must be true:
      • The workspace/app in the provider tenant is in Power BI Premium capacity – then a guest only needs a Fabric Free license.
      • The guest user has a Power BI Pro or PPU license from their own organization (your case) and the provider tenant allows guests to use their own license.
      • The provider tenant assigns a Pro or PPU license to the guest account in that tenant.
    3. How guests access the external tenant:
      • Sign in to Power BI with the work account that has the Pro license.
      • Use the tenant switcher to move to the external tenant where guest access is granted:
        • Select the profile picture in the Power BI (or Fabric) service.
        • Choose Switch.
        • In Switch tenant (preview), select the external tenant.
      • Alternatively, use the From external orgs tab on the Power BI home page. It lists all items shared from external tenants; selecting an item opens the provider tenant.
    4. About “two accounts tied to the same email address”:
      • The documentation notes that external users connect to their own tenant by default and then switch to the provider tenant. If the guest tenant is not visible in the tenant switcher or From external orgs tab, the guest B2B invitation or permissions in that external tenant may not be configured correctly.

If the guest tenant still does not appear after using the tenant switcher and From external orgs tab, the admin of the external tenant needs to:

    • Confirm that the work account is added as a guest user in their Microsoft Entra tenant.
    • Confirm that Power BI B2B sharing is enabled and that content is shared with that guest user.
    • Ensure licensing is satisfied via one of the three options above (Premium capacity, assigning a Pro/PPU license in their tenant, or allowing the guest to use the existing Pro/PPU license).
