Need Help Unlocking My Personal Microsoft Account

I’m having trouble accessing my personal Microsoft account. It’s currently locked, and I haven’t been able to get back in.

I’ve tried everything I could think of:

Logging in several times, but it still shows as locked.

  1. Using the recovery form with my alternate university email
  2. Clicking the password reset link sent to my university email, but even after changing the password, I still can’t access the account.
  3. Entering the verification code sent to my phone, but it says, “Try another verification method.”

I’m really unsure why my account is still locked, and I don’t want to accidentally make it worse by trying more links.

Could you please help me understand what’s happening and guide me on how to unlock my account

Hey there! Nice to meet you!

The error message you received, “Try another verification method.” indicates that your account is temporarily blocked due to the system detecting unusual activity.

Since you're able to reset your password but to no avail, kindly perform these steps to fix the error:

    1. Please wait exactly 48 hours to reset the password.
    2. If the issue persists, kindly wait exactly 1 week to perform another password reset. The idea is to wait for the account lock to expire first before you reset the password, as stated in this article: https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/troubleshooting-verification-code-issues-409090c4-92b5-42b9-8ae6-bcc97e62fc48#:~:text=If%20you%20received%20a%20Microsoft%20verification%20code%20that%20you%20did#:~:text=If%20you%20received%20a%20Microsoft%20verification%20code%20that%20you%20did

Important: Please make sure not to attempt to sign in or reset the password within that timeframe (48 hours or 1 week), as this may reset the lock cooldown.

Thank you for your understanding! Please feel free to let me know if you need anything else.

    Best regards,

    Darhyl

The account is locked because Microsoft detected suspicious activity or a possible violation of the Microsoft Terms of Use. Changing the password or signing in successfully does not automatically remove this lock; the account must be unlocked through Microsoft’s security process.

    Follow these steps, in order:

    1. Use the official unlock flow (security code)
Go to https://account.microsoft.com and try to sign in. When prompted, choose to receive a security code and enter the code sent by SMS.
      Key points from the guidance:
      • Any phone number that can receive text messages can be used; it does not have to be the one already on the account.
      • The phone does not need to be a smartphone or have internet access; it only needs to receive SMS.
      • After entering the code, a new password may be required.
    2. If the SMS option fails or shows “Try another verification method”
      • Try a different phone number (for example, a trusted friend or colleague’s phone) to receive the code. Microsoft will not keep or reuse that number, and the code expires after 10 minutes.
      • If you see a “usage limit exceeded” or similar message, stop trying for a while; too many attempts can trigger additional security limits.
    3. If the sign-in page does not show the normal flow (no Next button, or still shows locked)
If the sign-in screen does not show Next or clearly indicates the account is locked, follow the aka.ms/ link shown on that page. That link leads to the dedicated unlock/reinstatement form for locked accounts.
      • Fill out the form completely and submit it once.
      • A Microsoft Online Safety support agent will review the request and contact via email. Submitting multiple forms can slow down the response.
    4. If sign-in or username is no longer recognized
      • If the sign-in page says “That Microsoft account doesn’t exist” or similar, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper referenced in the documentation to confirm the account and get tailored recovery steps.
    5. If normal reset flows fail repeatedly
      • Use the Microsoft account recovery form from a device and location previously used with this account (for example, home Wi‑Fi and a familiar PC/phone). This increases the chance of automated verification.
      • Provide as much accurate information as possible. If two-step verification was turned on and none of the verification methods are accessible, support agents cannot override this for security reasons.
    6. Avoid making it worse
      • Do not keep retrying codes or forms in rapid succession; this can trigger rate limits and extend lockouts.
      • If you hit daily limits (for codes or the recovery form), wait until the next day before trying again.

In summary, unlocking a locked personal Microsoft account requires either:

    • Successfully completing the SMS security-code unlock at https://account.microsoft.com, or
    • Using the aka.ms unlock link shown on the lock screen and/or the account recovery form from a familiar device and location, then waiting for Microsoft’s automated systems or Online Safety team to complete the review.
