How to use text-to-speech on Kindle Cloud Reader in Edge or Chrome?

I want to listen to my Kindle books using Kindle Cloud Reader in Microsoft Edge, but the built-in Read Aloud feature doesn't work — it either reads gibberish or skips the

book content entirely. I also tried the Immersive Reader but it has the same issue. Other TTS extensions like Read Aloud and Natural Reader also fail. Is there any way

to get text-to-speech working on Kindle Cloud Reader in Edge?

    Hi Xuheng,

In most cases this happens because Kindle Cloud Reader does not fully expose the book text to the browser, which prevents browser features like Edge Read Aloud, Immersive Reader, or many text-to-speech extensions from detecting the content correctly. The reader displays the book using a protected format, so the page does not behave like a normal website where the text can be selected and read by TTS tools. Because of this limitation, the browser may skip the content or read incorrect characters.

Kindle Cloud Reader content is not exposed as normal page text, so Microsoft Edge Read Aloud, Immersive Reader, and similar browser-based TTS tools cannot reliably access or narrate the book text. When the page text is not available in a standard way, Immersive Reader and Read Aloud either read unrelated UI elements, skip the book content, or produce gibberish, which matches the behavior described.

Immersive Reader and Read Aloud in Edge work only when the underlying text can be parsed as regular web content. They cannot bypass how Kindle Cloud Reader delivers and protects book text, so there is no supported way in Edge to make these features read Kindle Cloud Reader books correctly.

For web pages that do expose text normally, Immersive Reader and Read Aloud can be used as follows:

    1. Open the web page in Microsoft Edge.
    2. Enter Immersive Reader using one of these methods:
      • Select Enter Immersive Reader in the address bar, or
      • Press F9 (or Function+F9 on some keyboards), or
      • Select the text, right-click, and choose Open in Immersive Reader, or
      • Add the prefix read: before the URL in the address bar and press Enter.
    3. Start Read Aloud:
      • In Immersive Reader, select Read Aloud from the toolbar, or
      • Use Settings and more (…) > More tools > Read Aloud, or
      • Right-click the page and select Read aloud.
    4. Use the Read Aloud toolbar to play, pause, move between paragraphs, and change Voice options (voice and speed).

These capabilities, however, do not change how Kindle Cloud Reader exposes its book content, so they cannot be used to reliably read Kindle books in that web app.
