I have not signed in to my Authenticator App, but I can't login to anything concerning this account without it. When I try to sign in, it keeps asking me for a code that I cannot get access to.

The account is locked in an MFA loop where Microsoft Authenticator is required to sign in, but access to the app or its codes is not available.

Use the appropriate path based on the type of account:

    1. If this is a work or school (organization) account
    • Try any alternative sign-in method that may be configured (SMS, phone call, email, security key) instead of Authenticator.
    • If no alternative method works, contact the organization’s IT Help desk / Microsoft 365 admin and ask them to reset MFA:
      • In Microsoft Entra admin center, they can go to Users → All users → [your account] → Authentication methods → Require re-register multifactor authentication. After this, the next sign-in will let you set up Authenticator again.
    • If you are the only admin and are also locked out:
      • Call Microsoft support using the regional Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support page and ask them to open a ticket with the Data Protection team to reset your MFA. Be clear that you are the only global admin and cannot pass MFA.
    1. If this is a personal Microsoft account and you cannot receive any codes
    • When prompted for a verification method you cannot use, select “I don't have any of these” and follow the prompts to update security info and recover the account.
    • If you still cannot receive verification codes on existing methods, you must wait until you can access one of the configured phone/email options or complete the recovery flow; support agents cannot send codes or change security info for you.
    1. If the error shown is “Authentication did not complete”
    • Ensure the Microsoft Authenticator app is unlocked.
    • Turn on notifications for the app and check if prompts or SMS codes are arriving silently.
    • Update to the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator.
    • Make sure the device has a working internet connection and correct date/time.

If the device with the original Authenticator setup was lost or replaced and no backup or secondary method exists, only an admin (for work/school) or the account recovery/security-info flow (for personal accounts) can break the loop.
