    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

Word on the laptop is treating the OneDrive file as a local file and therefore disables AutoSave and cloud saving, even though the internet connection and access to OneDrive on the web are correct. This behavior matches known OneDrive/Office sync issues.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Close and reopen Office apps
      • Close Word and all other Office apps (including Outlook and OneNote).
      • Reopen Word and then open the document again from the OneDrive location (for example, from the OneDrive folder in File Explorer or from Word > Open > OneDrive).
      • Check if the AutoSave switch is now available and turns on without error.
    2. Make sure Office and OneDrive are updated
      • In any Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now to install the latest Office updates. This resolves several known save/AutoSave issues.
      • Ensure Windows and OneDrive are up to date as well:
        • Run Windows Update and install all available updates.
        • Install the latest OneDrive client, then restart the computer.
    3. Confirm Word is not running as administrator
      • If Word was started with Run as administrator (directly or indirectly from an elevated command prompt/installer), it cannot communicate correctly with the OneDrive client.
      • Close Word, then start it normally (without elevation) and open the file again from OneDrive. When Word runs elevated, AutoSave, co-authoring, and Copilot are disabled for cloud files.
    4. Test with another OneDrive file
      • Create a new test document, save it directly to OneDrive from Word, and check whether AutoSave stays on and saving works.
      • If the test file works but the original does not, save a copy of the original document to OneDrive from Word and continue working in the new copy.

If, after these steps, AutoSave is still off and Word continues to show connection errors only in the desktop app, send feedback from Word (for example, via the feedback button) so the issue can be investigated further.
