On many new Windows devices starting in 2024, only new Outlook for Windows is preinstalled. Classic Outlook is not included by default, even if a Microsoft 365 subscription is present. In that case, classic Outlook must be installed separately and will not appear until that standalone classic Outlook installation is completed.
If classic Outlook was installed but cannot be found:
- Check the Start menu:
- Open Start and look under “All apps” for the classic Outlook icon (different from the new Outlook icon). Classic Outlook is a separate desktop app.
- Confirm classic Outlook is actually installed:
- If the device originally came only with new Outlook and classic Outlook was not installed via the standalone installer, it will not appear.
- To install classic Outlook properly, use the steps in the “Install or reinstall classic Outlook on a Windows PC” article. That page provides the Microsoft Store link and the “Select a language and download classic Outlook” section needed to complete installation.
- If the classic Outlook icon exists but fails to open and shows an error such as “We couldn't verify and install this because it is not available in the Microsoft Store…”:
- This indicates the device shipped without classic Outlook and the old shortcut no longer works.
- Follow the same “Install or reinstall classic Outlook on a Windows PC” process to get the working classic Outlook app.
Once installed correctly, classic Outlook appears as its own app in the Start menu and can be pinned to the taskbar separately from new Outlook.
